Well it's fair to say I've been completely rubbish in keeping up with this. The summer has been an incredibly busy time for me and I finally have some space to revive my blog. I think the best way to play catch-up is a load of lovely instagrams!

So, in short, over the summer I have been on holiday to Corfu and bought weird and wonderful souvenirs (i.e my Gandalf incense stick burner), seeing my amazing friends, losing my BBC Proms virginity, promoting and performing at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, FINALLY buying my new Apple Macbook Pro, shooing chickens out of the house, and buying a Lucious Malfoy cane with Phoebe playing Dobby! A very condensed account of my summer and I do intent to explain more in time! And it's only fitting that since I'll be going to university in a few weeks that I review my gap year.

But for now, good night, and speak soon!

I wrote a post a while ago about the amazing pieces in Zara and a particular fashion pursuit: the Rustic Combination Linen Coat. I said I couldn't find it anywhere, it was sold out on the website, it was nowhere to be seen in the shops, but knowing it was a fairly recent item I knew it was somewhere. Against the odds, I FOUND IT! I found my lovely coat. It took a delivery from Barcelona, but I found it and I am beyond ecstatic with it. It is just beautiful! I wore on a recent trip to London - I'm very unphotogenic, so be kind with these photos!

Coat - Zara | Top & Jeans - Topshop | Shoes - Office | Lipstick - MAC 'Morange'

It's the perfect summer coat. Fellow Englanders will know that our lovely country has a tendency to be boiling hot and sunny for about week and that's it and having a coat that is light, beautifully patterned and colourful is a great way of feeling summery even if the weather isn't up to it! I wore the coat with my lovely dark grey Super Soft Leigh jeans from Topshop which I got in the sale and were a bargain at £25 from £40 and my Blur T-shirt of their album cover 'Parklife' which I also got in the sale from Topshop for £10! Amazing, I absolutely love it!

I have also become OBSESSED with orange lately so when I saw these lovely shoes from Office on sale for £25 they were mine. And I finally got the chance to wear my orange MAC lipstick 'Morange' which is gorgeous! It's so summery and I love the fact it's got red running through to make it a dark orange it as opposed to having a light orange; I don't suit light shades very well. The coat though - isn't it incredible! And if the coat itself isn't good enough, look at the lining!! It's a work of art. This item is a little beauty - well done Zara!

I wore the coat to see 'The Cripple of Inishmaan' at the Noel Coward Theatre in London, starring Daniel Radcliffe. The show was amazing - it was really comedic, completely un-PC, moving, heartbreaking and tear-jerking. Daniel Radcliffe was brilliant, I have so much respect for him as an actor now; he was really convincing as an Irish lad and in his movements as the cripple (in this case, a sufferer of cerebal palsy) - I was completely starstruck! I am definately going to see it again and if anyone else around London is interested, the show is running until 31st August. There may be a few tickets left but it has been incredibly popular so nab the chance while you can!

What do you think of my coat and have any of you seen The Cripple of Inishmaan?

Bye bye petals, Love Alice xxx

Well I've been up to a lot recently and one of the things includes one of my ambitions for this year - to become a member of Eric Whitacre's Virtual Choir. Eric Whitacre, who is a modern composer, has invented this incredible thing which allows people from all over the world to join together to create a choir through the computer - a Virtual Choir.

It began in 2009 with Virtual Choir 1 and his piece 'Lux Aurumque' that included 185 singers from 12 different countries and has recieved nearly 4 million views on Youtube! In 2011, Virtual Choir 2.0 'Sleep' was released and involved over 2,000 singers from 58 countries. Virtual Choir 3 'Water Night' which was written in 1995 recieved 3,746 videos had been uploaded by 2,945 people in 73 countries! You can see how much the Virtual Choir has evolved over the years, and now with Virtual Choir 4: Fly - A Paradise of Bliss, it has expanded to over 8,000 singers from 101 different countries! Absolutely mindblowing! It has been a complete joy to be apart of this virtual choir and to be apart of a huge array of really talented singers from all over the world - I am certainly going to be joining every single one from now on.

For Virtual Choir 4, Eric Whitacre composed what was originally called 'Bliss' from his musical Paradise Lost (now called Fly - A Paradise of Bliss) and he wanted the focus to be on tall vowels, a pure tone, because getting loads of 'f's and vibratos together can be difficult! I was really worried when I first decided to do this about the technology and the fact you have to sing on your own but when I cracked it, its fairly easy!

I used the tools on the website to learn the soprano 1 part with the video of Eric Whitacre conducting. You could select the parts you wanted to hear when you practised, whether if it was just your part or all of them together with the beat and piano which was really helpful, so when I got to the recording I knew what I was doing!

When I was ready to record I put a nice black dress on and set up the laptop so it was against a plain, light wall, set the microphone up and I was ready! You can see how the video would look from the laptop camera picture. The website linked the microphone and camera onto the page so I see the video as as being able to see the conductor video. So I gave a big smile and tried to look directly at the camera throughout the recording.

To make things even easier to record, the system on the website allows you to listen to the piece whilst you record - you just have to plug your headphones into the computer, laptop, or the microphone in my case as it was an external microphone. That was a really nice touch because I felt like I was part of a choir, rather than just singing on my own.

I am so glad I pursued to do this, depsite my apprehensions because it was an excellent experience. The idea of being part of something so big and international is beyond my comprehension at the moment, but nonetheless wonderful. The finished project will be peformed in front of HM Queen Elizabeth II for her diamond jubilee celebrations! What an honour!

So that was my experience of doing the Virtual Choir! Have any of you done or thought about doing the Virtual Choir? I'll leave with the video of the first Virtual Choir and see what you think! Speak soon everyone!

During half term we had Animal Week at the Warner Bros. Studio Tour London - The Making of Harry Potter, where they had a lot of the real animal actors that play the beloved pets in Harry Potter. The animals were a wonderful addition to the sets and really brought the whole place to life! The animal trainers were lovely - willing to answer any questions about the training of the animals which I found really interesting. Meeting the animal actors had me completely starstruck - so here's a little account of my AMAZING day.

Here you can see the new additions that were made to the Great Hall in the form of breakfast! The Graphic Department were very clever in creating 'Pixie Puffs' and 'Cheeri Owls' wizarding cereals. And you can see one of the letters that the owls were trained to hold and drop - one Ron Weasley would rather not have recieved - his dreaded Howler! On display they had some other letters and packages that were use by the owls - because the owls hated holding onto the string itself, little pieces of leather were attached so the owl had something more substantial to hold onto during training.

By the Gryffindor Common Room, some of the heroes pets were being shown! One of my favourites was the picture of Pigwideon, Ron's owl - even though he was TINY, he wasn't afraid to stare people down. He was such a beaut! Also out of his cage was Ron's rat Scabbers, who, by some extraordinary coincidink, has a toe missing as did Peter Pettigrew! They also had Trevor, Neville Longbottom's toad who was a lot more lovely that he looks! Out of all the animals I expected to see, Trevor was definitely not one of them so it was a really nice surprise! If you follow the Studio Tour on Twitter, you may be aware of their 'Twitter Litter' which gave accounts of a group 6 kitten's training in the few weeks up to Animal Week and allowed members of the public to name them! They are so flipping cute. I couldn't get any decent pictures of them because kittens are very excitable and won't stop moving but here's the best one I took of the 'rogue' kitten they called 'Fletcher'. To get better pictures and videos of the kittens then you can see them on the tour's Twitter account HERE.

An ancestor of Fang, a Neopolitan Mastiff, was here at the tour, whose name is Ray. Despite the wrinkly face and slobber, she is lovely and seeing her loving some attention from Julie Tottman, one of the main animals trainers, was so sweet. There were loads of owls based in Diagon Alley at Eeylops Owl Emporium which was SO cool! Including Errol, the Weasleys bird who keeps crashing!

The last two are my absolute favourite. These animals are the ones I got the most starstruck over - Crookshanks and Hedwig. Crookshanks (whose real name is Crackerjack) is such a beautiful cat. I know he's got a squashed face, but I think that makes him even cuter. He's known for thinking he's a dog and is trained to go to specific marks - some even as small as a leaf! Hedwig is one the most gorgeous creatures I've ever met! His real name is Elmo and is trained to just sit and be beautiful. I said to one of the animal trainers 'That bird is a saint for sitting there all day' and he replied 'What? He likes sitting there all day doing nothing!' :'). So he's a very lazy bird but he does bite if you go near him!

So that my absolutely amazing time seeing all of the animal actors. Did anyone else go to Animal Week and enjoy as much as I did?

Here it is! The moment I get all hyper and excited about classical music and tell you all about the concert I went to last thursday. The concert was held at the Royal Festival Hall in London and performed by the Philarmonia Orchestra. It marked and celebrated the 100th Anniversary of Stravinsky's revolutionary ballet La Sacre du Printemps, or 'The Rite of Spring'. Stravinsky's piece was not the only one in the program which included Prélude à L'Après Midi D'Un Faune by Debussy and Amériques by Varèse.

The background of The Rite of Spring is extremely interesting. Stravinsky had become an overnight sensation with his two previous ballets 'The Firebird' (1910) and 'Petrushka' (1911) but the premiere of 'The Rite of Spring' in 1913, where both Debussy and Varèse were in attendance, revolutionised the way people thought about music and dance. For starters, it was the first ballet where pointe shoes weren't used, breaking an incredibly important convention in French and Russian ballet. Debussy stated that it 'haunted him like a beautiful nightmare'. Together with Nijinsky's choreography, Stravinsky's ballet consisted of a multi-tonal, rhythmic nightmare for the French upper classes, but a truimph for the growing bourgeoisie
and this clash amounted to a huge riot. The disturbances had begun from first moment music started to be played, punches were being thrown before the first half was over and by the end of the second half, the crowd was uncontrollable and Stravinsky fled before the show was over. There is no wonder that this piece is being celebrated for it has had an extremely important part in inspiring musicians and composers to stand against convention, to develop, not just musically, but socially and culturally too.

The evening itself was magical. The program complemented eachother exquisitely with the Debussy and Varèse also being turning points in musical development. Prélude à L'Après Midi D'Un Faune by Debussy, which was performed first, was wonderful. The piece is based on a poem by Stèphane Mallarmé which describes the sensual experiences of a faun who has just woken up from his afternoon sleep and discusses his encounters with several nymphs during the morning in a dreamlike monologue. The iconic opening flute solo was played absolutely beautiful by the soloist of the Philarmonia. It was rich in tone and was silky in its lyricism of the melody. The blend of the whole orchestra felt so complete and displayed the mystical picture of the faun and woodland exquisitely - it was like hearing a water colour painting. The harmonies that come through are heartbreaking. By the end of the piece I was in tears from its sensitivity and beauty - an incredibly moving performance.

Amériques by Varèse is a piece I had never heard before so I had no idea what to expect. Prélude à L'Après Midi D'Un Faune was the piece that actually made him want to be a composer and in the piece you can hear similarities with Debussy's piece, particularly the alto flute solo at the beginning of Amériques but you will also hear Modernist influences, such as that from Stravinsky. Varèse began writing Amériques when he arrived in America in 1915 - in the words of Esa-Pekka Salonen, the conductor of the Philarmonia, it was first piece that you are launched into a 'cacophony of dense, urban environment' which Varèse drew from his first impressions of the noises of the West Side of Manhattan: an aural explosion of street noises, police cars, firetrucks, river sounds, foghorns, and skyscraper constructions which are extremely well represented in the piece. Varèse swells the orchestra to ginormous proportions and even the reduced scoring calls for 9 percussionists, as well as depicting an unusal array of sounds, including lion's roar and the piece's signature sound of the wailing siren. The performance by the Philarmonia itself is mindblowing! Auralling, the performance was extremely powerful, but visually too the orchestra breathed of excitement - the percussionists were particularly entertaining to watch and you can understand why in the sheer volume created by the percussion. Their sticks were flying about everywhere. The end of the piece blew my head off!!! I don't know if it exists, but it sounded like 'ffffff'. The extended dissonant chord with an incredible crescendo drummed through the hearts of every audience member - it was met with a tumultuous roar and applause. Speechless I was!

And finally came The Rite of Spring. I've written a lot about this, so I won't go on for too long and I think it would be better if you listened to it instead. But, the performance was a dream. I'd wanted to see this piece performed for so long and it was met with a punchy, exciting, mind-boggling, tear-jerking spectacle. The Varèse was a hard act to follow, but by God did it follow triumphantly. Happy 100th Birthday Rite of Spring - lets hope people will still be celebrating it in another 100 years.

The performance itself was live on Radio 3 and you can still listen to it here on BBC iPlayer including some brilliant commentary - http://www.bbc.co.uk/i/b01slnqk/ - I urge you to have a listen!

Until next time lovelies! Peace. Love Alice xxx

So the last time I was here I told you all that I was going to see the Rite of Spring in concert which I went to on thursday. Before the concert Mum and I decided to go into London a little early and see the Blumenfeld
exhibition at Somerset House. I've never been to Somerset House before so I was really excited and it is really beautiful. Its quite suprising how there's a stately home bang in the middle of London, but hey ho!

The exhibition itself was absolutely incredible. For those of you who don't know, Blumenfeld was a photographer from the 1940s-60s and became one of the most influential fashion photographers in the world, working for the likes of Vogue and Harper's Bazaar with a unique and recognisable style. We couldn't take photos for obvious reasons but I would love to have shown all of you who are into fashion and photography and both just how beautiful his photography is. None of the pictures are edited, they way they look is how they were taken which is a real testament to his skill (despite calling himself a 'amateur') which you can see with the picture below. If you love fashion photography, or photography in general and are around in London this summer and have a spare hour or two, then why not head down? Its free admission and won't take up much time and I think its worth a see - I had a lovely time. It's open until 1st September. Any more information, you can get HERE.

Plus, Somerset House is fun to visit! Here's me looking a bit dumpy and wind-swept, sporting my lovely Cambridge Satchel! I was going to include about my night seeing the Rite of Spring but I need to do another post to do it enough justice. I could say how it was but I cannot find the words at this moment. For now here's a more hilarious picture of me, plus a glimspe of what is to come up!

Me and Lizzie, who is Awkward Queen, went to London last wednesday. I think we'd been planning to go London for a couple of months, but have never had the opportunity, so we decided to make a date during the week, made sure we weren't working etc and finally went! It was a really lovely day. We went to Oxford Street (obvs), Carnaby Street, Covent Garden and then got thoroughly lost in Kensington when we went to Harrods. We saw some interesting sights and bought myself some lovely purchases. I probably spent way too much money but it was definitely worth it!

Good ol' Shakespeare looking out from the 'Shakespeare's Head' in Carnaby Street

The Choccywoccydoodah shop in Carnaby Street - chocolate heaven! If you've seen the program you'll know.

Then we trundled to Covent Garden where there are several floating people. Here's Yoda, who was kind enough to wish me peace!

This guy was hilarious and was our view whilst we had lunch. I want to be his friend!

We ate lunch at '21' whose food was really scrummy which was a nice surprise. If you like pizza, this is a good place!

The purchases I made! Some gorgeous vintage Levi's denim shorts from Rokit for a beautiful £24!! Plus 2 MAC lipsticks.

I got 'Morange ' and 'Impassioned ' which I am delighted with. I'll do another post reviewing their success another time :)

So that was our day in London! We also visited Harrods which made me go incredibly giddy seeing all of the designer clothes. The interior is absolutely beautiful, particularly in the areas where they sell food. We got severely lost inside and outside the shop and we managed to walk in a giant circle about 3 times. But if you are visiting London, I'd recommend Harrods a visit, even if you can't afford a single thing and feel like a ragamuffin going in! Has anyone else had a good day in London recently?

I'm going to see 'The Rite of Spring' by Stravinsky at the Royal Festival Hall for its centenary anniversary from when it was first performed, so I'll be sure to let you know how that goes! But for now, here is 'Radioactive' by Imagine Dragons which I have becomed obsessed with recently.

Au revior honeys, love Alice xxx
Has anyone else just completely fallen in love with ZARA lately? I'm struggling not to spend all of my wages in it! I adore the paisley patterns and aztec design thats woven into a lot its style and the heeled sandals are really elegant. Plus, I thought my trouser/legging collection was good - ZARA trousers put them to shame. I am a sucker for an abstract pattern which is why these lovely things stood out for me!

I've just realised how awful they look altogether! Ah well, they are all pieces which I would like to own, but if you do shop in Zara, you will probably know that although on the most part, the pricing is quite reasonable, some items are very expensive. I've always thought Zara goes through phases of being really good and ... not so much, but the collection at the moment is really good!

My main fashion pursuit at the moment though is the Rustic Combination Linen Coat by Zara (below), which is £80.00. I think it's stunning - the contrast of the patterns between the sleeves and the bottom half of the coat is really vibrant but, married with the plain linen body of the coat, it's not too much which I think makes it really elegant. And to top it off - a beautiful lining on the inside which is so rustic. I would love to show the full inside. The only problem is: IT'S NOT MINE YET. I've been looking for it online and it has completely sold out. If anyone has seen it in the shops in the UK, please tell me because I would really like to find it!

So right now my brother is the middle of taking his AS exams and it took me back to this time last year when I was finishing my A Levels and reminded me of the tiring hours of revision and the STRESS STRESS STRESS of thinking I was going to fail. I was terrible at revision because I couldn't concentrate. I couldn't have dead silence because I was very aware there was nothing else but me revising and the television was far too distracting. It made me think about, potentially, the many of you who are doing A levels, AS levels, GSCEs or even university exams who are going through the same thing and how you find revision and whether its hard to concentrate.

Well, during my revision sessions last year, I discovered a couple of really good musical choices that I would put on that were the perfect balance between having silence and having something that was way too distracting, so I thought I would share!

The first is a Spanish viol player by the name of Jordi Savall (for those of you who don't know what a viol is, it is a 6-stringed instrument that was developed in the mid-1400s - almost a precursor to the cello). His repertoire specialises around Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque, so date-wise from around 1400-1700 and mainly consists of early stringed ensembles with some vocal works. He is a really important figure in promoting early music and bringing instruments like the viol back to the stage which I really admire. Although the music itself is not something you would choose to put on, for me it is perfect background music. The music doesn't feel imposing, it's very easy listening so you can carry on with work whilst feeling you have some warm, exotic company with you - the nature of the music and the use of the percussion takes me back in time to Medieval Spain which is lovely and lightens my mood everytime, which is definately something you need during exam time!! His albums La Folia (1490-1701) and Lluís del Milà: Fantasies, Pavanes & Gallardes are two in particular that I find very easy to work to. Here a couple of his examples of his music, but they are available on iTunes if you wanted to listen further. I REALLY hope you enjoy them :)

If you seriously can't get on with the 'classical' music then I've found The Leisure Society and their album The Sleeper to be very relaxing and unimposing in the same way as Jordi Savall. Dynamically, the music is pretty consistent throughout some of their songs and the use of the instruments, particuarly in using pizzicato or 'plucking' I should say with the guitar creates a very lovely mellow atmosphere. The song The Last of the Melting Snow is beautiful, with a sweet legato accompaniment, married with a rocking under current of plucked guitar to give just enough energy to the piece. You can listen to a few of their songs on their own website, if you click here including We Were Wasted which is also lovely and again you can listen to them on Youtube, iTunes, Spotify, whatever you fancy!

If you do have exams going on right now I wish you the best of luck and I hope I have provided a little remedy for the stress of revision. Just think, it doesn't last forever. It will all be over soon!

Lots of love and see you soon yummy people

It seems I say this every single time but I am sorry for the reeeeeally long absence. I have incredibly busy over the past four months with work and my music studies and I just haven't had anything really interesting to post. After a while, I felt I'd lost the reason why I did this and I was particularly unhappy with the design of my blog - my computer crashed so I had nowhere to create a new design and my photos are scattered everywhere. Now, my computer is fixed and I feel a lot more purposeful about my aims of this so I'm ready to give it another stab! But I want to thank the many of you who have still popped in. It's really nice! But I thought I would do a whistle stop visual tour of what's been going on with some lovely instagram photos.

So a lot has been going on! The first two pictures may be a bit confusing but they are shots from a show I did for my theatre group in January which was incredibly fun, particularly since I got to wear the most incredible costume for Queen Elizabeth I - For my brother's birthday in January, I was a lovely sister and took him to the Waffle House in St Albans which is set in a beautiful 16th Century mill, decorated with cute fairy lights and serves delicious waffles - England was covered in snow in February as you can see, and what better to remedy the cold with a lovely Cafe Nero and The Musical Times on a day off - My Harry Potter iPhone covers that I bought from Etsy and was absolutely delighted with them. Really well made and I have dropped my phone many times and it is still intact - A night out seeing Chase and Status in Watford with Lizzie and Laura which was immense - A visit to Durham where I shall be studying next year - On the way back in King's Cross Station, I visited the Platform 9 and 3/4 shop (which is ridiculously overpriced) but I managed to get my ticket to Hogwarts.

This has been long so I'll stop, but I do want to make blogging a usual occurence now. As a musician, I'm going to play to my strengths and talk a lot more about music - about interesting topics in music, current and new exciting music and any pieces that I feel are so moving, they should be shared with the world. But until next time ...

It was my 19th birthday on the 17th. I'm feeling quite old, but I know I shouldn't complain. I was given some lovely presents as you can see. I got a lovely purple Ralph Lauren polo jumper, a beautiful piece of Hedwig in a cage and £40 at Topshop which I shall enjoy IMMENSELY. I got a few things from lush including a shampoo bar (with its own pot - HOW EXCITING), some 'Turkish Delight' body wash which smells absolutely beautiful and the texture is like mousse which is brilliant as its soft enough to wash with but it doesn't fall apart in your hand, and finally I got some 'Lip Service' lip balm which is really smooth, although with the cold weather its a bit frozen!

However, I must highlight my favourite present of the lot - my Fluoro Yellow 13" Cambridge Company Satchel! I asked for this at Christmas time but my mum was really skeptical about getting it because its so bright and realistically goes with pretty much nothing. Nonetheless, I persisted and I finally got it for my birthday. It is absolutely incredible and certainly one of my favourite pieces now. It is very much a statement piece so I've been trying to find ways of displaying it at its best, so watch this space to see how I get on with styling it! And any ideas, fire them at me! I think this is a real testament to The Cambridge Satchel Company in successfully making a classic item really modern so I salute you!

Anyway, I hope everyone is okay! Again I'm sorry for my long absence but I've been working a lot recently as well as rehearsing for a show which started yesterday so my free time has been pretty minimal. I will try to post again soon, but for the meantime I leave you with my house and my dog in the snow we're having in England.

I'm sorry for the massively long absence but I've been so busy lately and have had NO camera to take pictures of anything with! So I've had plenty to post about but no pictures. Oh, and my computers completely packed in, so now there's no Photoshop! Fab times. Anyway - Christmas has been absolutely wonderful this year and I've been completely spoilt so I wanted to show you my lovely presents. I've been able to take this photos off my NEW IPHONE 5. It's the most incredible phone ever and the cameras pretty decent so I hope you enjoy these!
So those were my Christmas presents! There are a few that are missing but this is the bulk of them so sorry for bombarding you with so many photos! You can see I was completely spoilt. Some of my faves are my Cranberry coloured disco pants, my Seiko watch, my music, my 'Sopranos are Superior' jim jams and my amazing 'Gryffindor' pillow - my mum got this when I invited her to my place of work in Leavesden. Any guesses? ;) But I love ALL my presents so much, I'm incredibly lucky.

I hope you have all had an amazing Christmas! It's quite sad thinking it's over, but we still have the New Year to celebrate! I am sorry about my lack of posting, but thankyou to everyone whose been popping in, I really appreciate it. Thankyou again, and until next time, Merry Christmas :)

Wow, it's been a bit of a long time since last blogging! I'm really sorry, life has somewhat taken over a bit and I haven't had a camera to take pictures of things. I'm really surprised so many of you have bothered to come back so thank you, I really appreciate it! I have some time to catch up and post things that I should've posted a LONG time ago.

I'm gonna start with my recent purchases. So, I was shopping in River Island quite a while ago now and looking around the 'Chelsea Girl' section when I came across a gorgeous black dress. I didn't have a black dress and it's one of those iconic statement pieces you need to have in your wardrobe so this was a great find. Plus, what I love about this dress is that it's not a standard shape or style that would expect from a 'little black dress' in that it's not fitted and has t-shirt length sleeves. This is sounding confusing - I'm going show you. WARNING: I'm not a serious blogger so I wasn't taking this whole thing seriously when we were taking pictures i.e. I'm looking like a nonce in pretty much EVERY single photo and my brother isn't the most adept with cameras so these arn't the best photos. Enjoy!

So this is my lovely black dress! I hope you can see what I mean about it not being the typical 'black dress'. It's incredibly comfy since it isn't fitted which is good for going out if you bloat easily (I do). The detail is beautiful! The pattern on the dress is a gothic and girly antique pattern in black velvet which gives it a lovely edge. And at a very reasonable price! My black shoes were a surprise buy form Primark because usually I hate it, but they are really nice simple dolly shoes and I wear them nearly all the time.

OMG - River Island have actually been a bunch of babes recently. I've always wanted a pair of 'flatforms' as I believe they are called but they have always been so expensive which is why I was so happy when River Island had a sale and I managed to nab these beauties for teeny prices. They both previously retailed at £40 a pair, which was a months allowance for me so buying them was out of the question, but during the sales I got them for £8 each pair. YES PEOPLE - £8. Insane. What a bunch of pretties River Island are? They're really quirky shoes which was fantastic because they suit my personality. I wore the zebra print ones into town the other night and for once my feet didn't hurt. I'd recommend everyone get a pair. I haven't been able to find matches, but here are similar ones for reduced prices:
This is me taking the mick. It's an 'on way to shoot' shot. By the way, what do you all think of my scrunchy? I know scrunchies used to be things you wore when you were 8 years old, but I think they could make a come back. I'm gonna make it happen (hopefully). The one I'm wearing is a black velvet scrunchy from Boots at £4.95. I know it's quite pricey but I wear mine loads so it's definitely worth it!

I think that's enough for one post! But thankyou again to everyone whose still been popping in, it's really nice. Life update will come shortly but for now I'll leave you with my hilarious face and the bags under my eyes. I hope everyone is dandy!

Don't forget the big question: What do you think of my scrunchy?

It's been WAY too long since my last Desert Island Discs and I apologise for that! If you've read my previous posts, you'll know I attended the Eton Choral Course in Oxford this summer which has inspired me to do this particular DID. We sang an array of INCREDIBLE choral works but I couldn't possible include all of them in one post! I'll spread them out! I chose a piece that really stood out for me: 'Greater love hath no man' by John Ireland.

I love John Ireland. He had a rather difficult life, always feeling inadequate, he was very introverted, had few friends and had a disastrous marriage which was eventually annulled. One of his pupils Benjamin Britten (A Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra) gave up on him after a year, deeming him 'drunk, hungover or absent' during tutorials. I can't help but feel huge sympathy for him. Nevertheless, he gained honorary degrees from RAM and RCM (Royal Academy and College of Music) and a doctorate from Durham, so not all bad. Ireland was a composer that is branded as an 'English Impressionist' whose works were more redolent of French and Russian music like Ravel and Stravinsky; two of my favourite genres of music are French Impressionism and English music of the early 20th Century so John Ireland is the perfect mix! Unfortunately, Ireland destroyed a lot of his early works thinking they weren't good enough, but I'm hoping that after listening to this piece you'll feel an element of disappointment that he did it, because 'Greater Love' is so beautiful. Can you imagine what treats we would have been granted if he had faith in himself?

'Greater love' was written in 1912 for choir and organ and the words are taken from the Song of Solomon, the Gospel of John and various letters of Peter and Paul:

Many waters cannot quench love,

neither can the floods drown it. Love is strong as death.

Greater love hath no man than this,

that a man lay down his life for his friends.

Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree,

That we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness.

Ye are washed, ye are sanctified,

ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus.

Ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation;

That ye should show forth the praises of him

who hath call'd you out of darkness into his marvellous light.

I beseech you brethren, by the mercies of God,

that you present your bodies, a living sacrifice, holy,

acceptable unto to God, which is your reasonable service.

The piece goes through a number of keys, moods and tempi that make so interesting to listen to. The harmonies created are absolutely stunning, particularly when created by many voices uniting as one.The piece explores the faith and love of God in a way that is so intimate and delicate as well as demonstrating the power of their faith and God's power to raise people out of darkness; and the lovely quiet prayer that ends the piece. The solos are beautifully constructed with a mixture of sweet scalic passages and powerful sweeping leaps - the baritone solo is gorgeous, but I'm a sucker for a bass :P I love how the tonality changes to a lovely delicate minor for the treble solo, ending on a warm Tierce de Picardie (this is when the 3rd note of a chord is changed to make the chord sound major after being in a minor key). Moreover, the shift of tonalities of the baritone solo set up the next section which sees the choir preaching in such a glorious manner to end with the burst of 'marvellous light'. One part that gets to me everytime is 'that you present your bodies, holy, acceptable unto God'. The harmonies are so beautiful it's heartbreaking, and singing it made me want to cry everytime. The piece is supported with huge power from the wonderful organ which gives it so much depth and substance, particularly the roaring bass! Although it sounds incredible and this is now one of my favourite pieces, I can't help thinking that it's much more enjoyable to sing with other wonderful singers as I had the pleasure of doing.

Anywho, I hope you love this piece as much as I do or can appreciate it's beauty. I'm not religious and I can appreciate its message for what it is and how faith has inspired it, so I really hope religious factors don't hinder your listening to it! Here's two youtube recordings which inevitably don't do the piece justice but I'm sure you can find a recording on itunes for 84p or whatever!

This first recording is sung by the choir of All Saints' Church, Northampton. I prefer the baritone solo in this one.

<p2></p2>

This second recording is sung by the choir of St Paul's Cathedral; the treble solo in this one is lovely and personally I like it better than the first one.

That's it for this Desert Island Disc! I hope you enjoy the piece and I'm not gonna say that the next one will be soon because I might be lying! :P Until next time my lovely peoples!

I hope you are all enjoying the rest of your summers before going back to school, college and, for most of my friends, university :D Luckily, they don't go until the end of september/ early october so I won't be a lazza until then! I'm taking a gap year and it's gonna be really fun ... I can't wait!
Anyway, to celebrate my A Level results I was given a couple of presents from my family, which are absolutely beautiful, in their own way.
The first present, as most of you will probably recognise, are Navy Blue Disco Pants from American Apparel. FINALLY! I've wanted a pair for so long but I haven't been able to afford any, not suprising as they are an extreme £70 but since I did well in my A Levels my mum finally gave in. I now have the most expensive bum and legs in the house. WOO.
The second present is a beautiful pocket mirror by Kate Spade. The casing is made from silver and on the top is an engravement with 'hello sunshine' which is so cute. Plus, it is INCREDIBLY shiny and pristine so it hasn't left the beautiful packaging much. Plus, it came from the lovely store of Liberty in London which is brilliant because I get the bag :D I can imagine is was quite pricey though! I'm so incredibly lucky, the presents are amazing!

In other news, I went to Topshop yesterday and they had an amazing sale on jewellery with up 70% off or something and I managed to obtain lovely purchases at sexy prices.
I love the 'collar style' necklace, it's really pretty and light, plus I'm really into jewellery that you can wear with collared shirts so this was a great find. It originally retailed at £12.50, which is a price I would never spend jewellery since I can't afford to spend 1/4 of my allowance on one thing, ANYWAY, the sale price was teeny £2.50!!!!! I was so excited, particularly since I don't have a huge amount of jewellery I like wearing, but to find a lovely, fashionable item for that price was brilliant. I don't have a lot of rings either and I have looking for an attached ring like this one for ages, but as always, they're too expensive. I loved this ring the moment I saw it. It has a tribal, viking air about it which is the quirky style I love. This ring was originally priced at £14.00 which I think is extortionate but this too was reduced to £2.50!!! I don't think I've loved Topshop more. I would never expect such a drastic reduction so that was a VERY good day.

That's all from me today. I'm still deciding on the next Desert Island Disc. There were so many beautiful pieces on the Eton Choral Course it's hard to choose! Anyway, until then, byebye! Speak soon!

Lots of love
Alice xxx

Hello everyone!

It's been an incredibly long time so sorry about that! I've had a really busy summer: I went to Zante mid-July, Cyprus in the beginning of August and I went on a choral course in Oxford for a week shortly after that so I haven't had much time to blog about anything I'm afraid! But today is dedicated to my life for the past week.

I went on a course for choral singers which is run by 'Eton Choral Courses' which was set up by Ralph Allwood, a previous Director of Music at Eton College (yes, the private school of the royals which sounds incredibly pretentious but Ralph was actually really nice and not pretentious in anyway) and the course I was on was based in Queen's College at Oxford University.

It was absolutely incredible. I learnt more than I could have imagined, kearning new singing techniques, singing wonderful pieces with a bunch of amazing people. I'm not gonna lie, I was slightly put off by some of the posh and pretentious people; the course is quite expensive so most of the people that went go to boarding school and private, so for a while I felt really out of place, but I was judgemental far too early and discovered how wonderful they are.

This is The Queen's College and the chapel which we rehearsed and performed in. It is absolutely beautiful. Singing in the lovely chapel was an absolute pleasure, the acoustics are incredible. During rehearsals sometimes I'd be bored sodless and then look around at the intricate architecture, the vibrant stained glass window and the amazing circular painting and realise where I was.

This is Merton College chapel which we did our recital in. This is only a fraction of the college as well as the chapel. The college is set in beautiful grounds and there a few more quads than the one I am showing which are equally as beautiful. In the chapel, the image only shows the front part; behind this is a vast hall with a bell tower and grand pillars: it is quite a spectacle! At the beginning of the recital, we waited until the bell had struck 4 o'clock and instantly came in with 'HAIL GLADDENING LIGHT' by Charles Wood; an absolutely beautiful piece! Here are a few photos of my time there. Oh, and I take no credit for any of these photos because my camera is broken and so I wasn't able to take any, so thankyou so google and my friends on facebook!

The second picture is of my consort group which I had immense fun with. The point of concorts was to improve sight reading and interactions with smaller ensemble groups, plus we had to prepare a piece to sing grace at a lunctime and we sung 'The Lord's Prayer' by Sheppard and it was incredibly hard - it was the most complicated polyphony I have come across, but really enjoyable. One of our practises was in Magdelen College Chapel, the most beautiful college in Oxford so singing in the chapel was an absolute thrill.

Since I've been singing choral music all week I think I have soem inspiration for the next Desert Island Discs which I have completely neglected, I apologise. Anyway, I hope everyone is okay! Hopefully I'll blog soon. Speak soon.

So to celebrate the end of school FOREVER and the end of year 13 our school has a boat party where we sail up and down the River Thames for a bit, while drinking and dancing and chatting ... on a boat. It's as cool as it sounds! It was an amazing night, seeing and talking to everyone, people who I may never see again. It's really sad thinking about it, particularly growing so close to friends that you don't want to lose. But at least we had an awesome time at the boat party. Although, I had quite a bit to drink so some of my memories of it are quite vague.

Anyway, my mum took me around the whole of central London trying to find a bloody dress. We exhausted Oxford Street. I was trying to find this gorgeous grey assymetric dress from Lipsy coz it was sold out online. But we went to Debenhams and found a beautiful dress from Lipsy:
Pretty cool, isn't it? I really love my dress - I know that sounds really bigheaded but the dress does it itself. It has a really lovely low-arched back, plus I love how the embroidery goes over the sweetheart neckline. The chiffony skirt is lovely and there's quite a bit of extra material which flows in the wind. ANYWAY, enough about my dress. The earrings I wore are from Accessorize which I love, they're one of my favourite pairs, and my shoes were from New Look.

So, firstly, when I was in the midst of revision I had a mental breakdown and so I went to town to get a break. To treat myself I bought some new nailpolish: Barry M's Magnetic Nailpolish in Blue.

This nailpolish made me so happy. It's really fun, the way the magnet forms the shapes on your fingers of blue and silver. At some angles, the polish looks like it's in 3D which is really pretty and it like you got a Cat Eye marbles on your fingertips. The shapes turn out really well for the most part and although the shapes don't form over the whole fingernail all of the time, I still love it. At £5 a pot, I think it's really reasonable for the quality, and even I was a bit wary of the price and I am incredibly stingy, but it's completely worth it.

Ahh, so pretty! I apologise for the poor photo but taking a photo with a big arse Nikon was quite hard! Hopefully you can see the outcome though!

The next pieces of makeup are on my face in the above pictures. By the way, this was the photo that I looked least like a bitch and even now I look like a bitch. Sorry, I'm really not one. ANYWAY, the first piece of makeup is MAC's Sheerblush blusher Tenderling colour.
I love this blusher. It's really light but it gives you just a bit of colour on your cheeks for when the light hits it. Plus, it's really good for wearing against heavy eye makeup or heavy lips coz it stops you looking like a whore :D However, being MAC, it is going to be expensive, which is certainly the case in this product at £17.50. I'd buy again if I could but I probably can't for a while, so I really hope it lasts!
I'm also wearing the lovely 'brick' coloured MAC Lip Pencil and the incredible MAC 'Ruby Woo' coloured Retro Matte Lipstick, retailing at £10.50 and £14.50 respectively. More expensive products I know, but these two combined create the most wonderful red lipstick EVER. The colour is really warm and sweet, a real rosy colour. It's the perfect red for me: I'm really pale and so most red lipsticks drown my face and are a bit dark, so this is a godsend! Oh, and the lipstick has the most incredible smell - omg, the smell is so sweet. I would buy the lipstick alone for the smell - it makes me feel happy. The lip liner is amazing for creating a perfect line which is always good!

Still no computer so all the photoes on here are completely unedited again. Sorry! Anyway, during the half term I FINALLY got to go to the Harry Potter Studio Tour. I only live about 20 minutes away from it which is pretty neat! I had the most amazing day, the sets, props, costumes, everything is incredible! For those who haven't been and want to be suprised I would turn away now, coz this is a massive SPOILER ALERT!
These are some of the incredible sets that you're are able to see on the tour. The Gryffindor Common Room looks so cosy and cute. It makes me really want to go to Hogwarts as a Gryffindor. Dumbledore's Office is amazing. It's so grand but also slightly rugged, you know that look after stone has worn for a while, it's so detailed. There are hundreds of books on the shelves (which apparantly a load of old yellow pages that have had covers put on them). It's just wonderful. One of the most impressive has to be the ptions classroom. The detail is staggering. Around the classroom are hundreds of jars with made up stuff inside them, of all different colours, shapes and sizes. The green pot had a spatula stirring itself (how cute!) and the rest of the props were perfectly formed. My favourite set of all without a doubt was Diagon Alley; it was like walking into a real wizarding world. The shops were so cute and dinky and the buildings were pulled around so it looks like the buildings are so old that they had deformed over the years. They had an ice cream shop and it was the best ice cream shop ever. It was painted in pastel colours and the floor was like that of a 1950s American Diner. And of course I drooled all over Fred and George Weasley's shop, because I love them immensely.
So, 1) Me next to the pensieve 2) Me next to the Night Bus 3) Me and bro with Butterbeer moustaches :D The Butterbeer was really nice - the cream was delicious and caramelly (if that's a word) and the drink itself was really sweet. It would have been better if they had an alcoholic version though. The tour was incredible obviously, which means one thing: AN AMAZING GIFT SHOP. Hands down, the best gift shop EVER. I had very limited amounts of money so I settled for three things:
Are they not amazing!? The Chocolate Frogs were delicious! Solid chocolate frogs! And they came with a wizard card :D I got Salazar Slytherin and my bro got Godric Gryffindor so we swapped coz I'm a Gryffindor. Bertie Botts Every Flavour beans really do contain every flavour - it's such an incredible discovery I don't want to give the surpise so I won't tell you what absolutely delightful flavours you can taste :D. And lastly, I had to get Harry Potter specs didn't I? We got a cute Harry Potter passport which had various games in it. We had to search for Golden Snitches dotted around the place which was actually really fun. I was so good I should be a seeker.

Well, I hope I didn't spoil the suprise for anyone. It was one of the best days of my life. I don't tihnk I have ever acted as much of a kid as I did that day. Oh, for anyone who is going, take this advice - take 2 camera batteries!!!! No matter how much you charge one up, they ALWAYS run out in the place. Trust! Anyway, I'll be back soon with more stuff to talk about!

I have so much to post about and I don't really know where to start. Exams have got in the way of EVERYTHING, but I have officially finished school, forever, so I can have a life now WOO!
Also, my computer completely fucked itself up which has my games, Paint Shop Pro and my composing program on it, so I apologise for any shitty pictures up on here, which are going to be completely unedited ... so beware! It is so nice to be able to blog again. YAY.

So what's been going on? Well, we had muck up day at school, which is the last day of proper school where you dress up and have a water fight effectively. Obviously I went as Harry Potter:
This is me and bro (I'm on the right coz I do look like a man and I don't want peeps getting confused, ha) and this is my amazing cloak. I love it. It looks really genuine. It has a point hood, red lining in the inside, a wand pocket - it's brilliant. I had to improvise the rest coz the cloak was a bit pricey. Also, this came with it:

Anyway, the next day we had a party and we went to Emily's beforehand. Lizzie and Emily had fun with my camera and there are some really nice shots. I love these ones:

Welcome to number 4 of my Desert Island Discs. I said this week I'd do something a bit different and I think I'm going to achieve it this week, sort ot. It's not completely out of the norm, but it's certainly not mainstream. So this week, it's the Lento E Largo, Tranquillissimo from - Symphony No. 3, Op. 36 (“Symphony of Sorrowful Songs”) by Henryk Górecki.

So, just to tell you a bit about the composer. Górecki was a Polish born composer who died quite recently in November 2010. In his early career he composed Serialist music during the 1950s and 60s, influenced by Webern (one of the composers of the 2nd Viennese School), Stockhausen, Penderecki and Serocki. and his music was characterised by dissonant modernism from these influences.
However, during the 1970s, he started to move towards sacred minimalism which is exemplified in this piece. His Symphony no. 3, from whihch this piece is from is his most popular and was composed in memory of those who died in the Holocaust, which really comes across in the piece.

The piece itself is one of the most heart-breaking pieces I have ever heard, it makes me cry. (Sorry, another heartbreaking song). I think in light of what its attributed to, the melody and harmony bring it across perfectly and having the idea of the Holocaust in the back of your mind really makes you feel overwhelmed emotionally. The harmonies are simple and make use of Medieval modes which I think is absolutely beautiful, because I love tonal ambiguity. It's a very mournful piece, full of bereavement, but it's very sublte to bring this across. It doesn't include huge great crashes of percussion to heighten the emotion which I like about this piece, because it almost touches your emotions in a way that allows you to be overwhelmed in your own way, rather than someone obviously trying to drum it in to you. I do love the emotional works, for instance by Beethoven, but I think for this occassion, in light of the Holocaust, it's not something you can generalise.

The beginning of the piece is so beautiful. It opens with a folk drone of A-E, and a melodic fragment of E-G#-F# which sounds like you're at the top of a mountain. Gorecki said that 'I wanted the second movement to be of a highland character, not in the sense of pure folklore, but the climate of Podhale ... I wanted the girl's monologue as if hummed ... on the one hand almost unreal, on the other towering over the orchestra'. The girl he referring to is 18-year-old Helena Wanda Błażusiakówna, who was a highland woman who left an inscription on the wall of her prison cell in a Gestapo prison at the foot of the Tatra mountains in Southern Poland, and she only thinks of her mother, which is what Górecki was fascinated by.

Although this piece is incredible sad, it is absolutely beautiful and is most definately worth listening to. It's a very thoughtful piece. I would love to take this piece to a desert island, although, not without a remedy to pick me up again afterwards.

I hope you love the piece as much as I do. I really is an incredible piece, particu/arly with its ability to bring out such emotion. Net time, I will do something cheery! And perhaps a little faster! Thankyou for reading! :)

I was meant to blog about these ages ago but I didn't have the time. So a couple of weeks ago my mum was incredible and bought me a pair of Jeffrey Campbell Litas! I was so happy. I got a pair of grey suede because they woul go with so much I own. When I can next afford some I'm gonna get a more wacky, once-in-a-lifetime pair. They're so comfortable! I love them so much. Anyway, my brother helped me take some photoes of them. I didn't really have enough to figure a perfect outfit, so this ones a bit gay, but I wanted to show you all the jumper my brother bought me as well.
Hello!
I'm sorry for the lack of posts recently and that this Desert Island Discs is so late! My computer's been messed up recently so it's had to be fixed.

Anyway, moving onto the 3rd edition of Desert Island Discs. Now today's piece is one that most people have probably heard of, so this selection maybe a bit cliche to some musicians, but despite that, it's one of the most beautiful, heart-wrenching pieces ever written It's Elgar's "Nimrod", the 9th variation of his 'Enigma Variations'.

This variation was described by Elgar to be 'the story of something that happened'. When Elgar was depressed and was close to giving up his music, his very close friend and advisor Augustus J. Jaeger visited him and encrouaged to continue composing. In this visit, Jaeger referred to the same problems experienced by Beethoven who went on to compose more beautiful music and demanded Elgar do the same. Jaeger then sang the opening bars of the second movement of Beethoven's Piano Sonata no. 8 'Pathetique' which is suggested in the theme of Nimrod.

If one does not feeling completely emotionally overwhelmed, then, they're not human. The melody is so simple but is accopanied by wonderful harmonies to make it a wonderfully sweet sound. The mixture of tonality from major to minor creates a huge emotional atmosphere - a feeling of being sorrowful one time, triumphant the next. Towards the end when the theme is played tutti and builds to a huge climax, your heart feels like it's about soar out of your chest, it's enlightening, and quickly the music dies away to piano dynamic and its such a wonderful release of tension. This is the hardest piece to talk about because, it is really simple, but the effect it creates leaves me speechless. It's probably a good idea if you listened to it yourselves, but the reason why I would take this to a desert island is because it effects you so emotionally, the piece is mindblowingly beautiful and will make you feel so uplifted and speechless that it would be hard to survive on a desert island without it!

This link takes you to a rememberance of soldiers and a tribute to their service but the Royal Philharmonic do a lovely version of Nimrod so that's why I chose this one.

I hope you enjoyed this edition of Desert Island Discs!
It plays LPs but it's got an 8-inch on it at the moment. The sound it makes is incredibly. It's really old, grainy and crackly which may sound horrible but it really makes you sound as if you're in the '70s and, as a lover of vintage, its a real treat to feel that way. I think it's beautiful!

My mum was telling about the times when she used to go her firends house and a bunch of them would listen to vinyls and chill. Very indie like! And they alll used to have arguements when it was time to turn it over. 'Well, I'm not turning it over, you turn it over' 'No, I'm getting up otherwise someone will nick my seat, you turn it over' 'No, I'm comfy and I don't wanna lose my seat'. In the end, someone gets up and another nicks their seat. It made me laugh. Sorry if the humour didn't translate! :S
